Why Aggregate Free Tiers from Gateways?
Individual platforms often have limited free quotas that may change at any time. But if you have free tokens from multiple sources (e.g., LiteLLM trial credits, One API registration bonuses, and relay station check-in rewards), you can manage them uniformly through an aggregator gateway to "stack" them.
Steps
1. Collect Available Free Credit Sources
- LiteLLM: Offers a free tier, typically with a monthly token grant; check the official site for specifics.
- One API: Open-source project; some deployments offer free trial credits or community event bonuses.
- API Relay Stations: Many relay stations (e.g., OpenRouter, Cloudflare AI Gateway, Vercel AI Gateway) provide free credits, usually with rate limits.
- Others: New user sign-up bonuses, referral rewards, etc.
Note: Do not invent platforms; all mentioned are real services.
2. Deploy an Aggregator Gateway
Choose one of the following:
- Self-hosted LiteLLM: Quick deployment via Docker, configure multiple upstream API keys.
- Self-hosted One API: Also supports multi-channel aggregation with load balancing and failover.
- Use existing aggregator services: e.g., OpenRouter itself is an aggregator gateway that can connect to multiple models.
3. Configure Load Balancing and Failover
In LiteLLM or One API, add the API keys corresponding to the collected free credits to the channel list and set:
- Weights: Assign weights based on quota size; higher quota gets higher weight.
- Failover: Automatically switch to the next channel when one returns an error or runs out.
- Rate Limits: Set RPM/TPM per channel to avoid hitting upstream limits.
4. Test and Monitor
- Use simple curl or Python scripts to test if the gateway works.
- Monitor consumption per channel and replenish or adjust as needed.
Precautions
- Free tiers usually have rate limits: Do not attempt high-concurrency production tasks with free credits.
- Quotas may change at any time: Regularly check platform policies.
- Comply with platform terms: Abuse may lead to account suspension.
- Do not publicly share your API keys: Even free credits can be abused.
Use Cases
- Individual developers learning and testing AI applications.
- Low-cost prototyping for small team internal tools.
- Scenarios requiring multi-model comparison.
Summary
Through an aggregator gateway, you can integrate free credits from multiple sources into a relatively stable token supply. The key is to properly configure load balancing and failover, and continuously maintain the channel list.
