Why Go Through Indirect Channels

Applying for trial credits directly from a vendor's sales team usually means clearing budget, legal, and procurement gates. It takes time and signals a clear purchase intent. But that is not the only way a company gets AI tokens for evaluation. Cloud marketplaces, SI partners, and public sandboxes are three channels often approved by different teams, with different thresholds and talking points.

This article only covers routes that genuinely exist and are actionable in 2026. It does not promise specific credit amounts; where numbers appear, they are phrased as "approximately" or "typically."

Route 1: Cloud Marketplace Trial Subscriptions

AWS Marketplace, Azure Marketplace, Google Cloud Marketplace, and regional marketplaces such as Alibaba Cloud Marketplace and Tencent Cloud Marketplace all allow third-party AI vendors to list "trial" or "BYOL + free trial" offerings. An enterprise can subscribe with an existing cloud account, with no new contract required.

Steps

  1. Confirm your team has a paid cloud account or enterprise agreement. Most marketplace trials require a verified business account.
  2. Search the marketplace for the target model vendor (for example, a vendor offering an inference API) and filter by "Free Trial."
  3. Subscribe to the trial listing. Distinguish "software subscription" from "consumption-based metering": the former grants a time window, the latter maps to token consumption.
  4. Complete vendor authorization in the marketplace console and bind the trial subscription to your cloud project or resource group.
  5. Track consumption through the unified marketplace bill to avoid auto-conversion to paid after the trial ends.

Conditions and Limits

  • Business accounts are typically required; individual developer accounts may not see trial listings.
  • Trial credits are usually tied to the cloud account; re-registering the same entity generally does not stack credits.
  • Some listings auto-renew after the trial; disable auto-renewal before expiry.

Route 2: Joint POC Credits from SI / Consulting Partners

System integrators, regional resellers, and cloud MSPs often hold "co-sell" or "POC support" credits issued by the vendor, intended to help customers run proof-of-concept work. These credits bypass your procurement process and go through the partner's deal registration instead.

Steps

  1. Find a vendor-certified partner in your region and industry (check the vendor's Partner Directory).
  2. Propose a tightly scoped POC: clear business scenario, data scope, validation window (typically 2–6 weeks), and success criteria.
  3. Ask the partner to file an internal POC deal registration; credits are released after vendor approval.
  4. Sign a lightweight POC agreement or data processing addendum (DPA) stating data will not be used for training.
  5. At the end, get a results report you can use as the basis for a formal purchase.

Conditions and Limits

  • Partners invest when a POC has a realistic path to a paid project; pure research requests are harder to approve.
  • Credits are often called on your behalf by the partner, so you may not receive an independent API key.
  • Data compliance terms, especially cross-border data, must be confirmed upfront.

Route 3: Public and Developer Sandboxes

Many model vendors, cloud providers, and open source communities offer public sandbox environments (Sandbox / Playground / Lab) so teams can validate capabilities without a contract. These are usually rate-limited per session or per day. They are not production-grade, but they are enough for technical evaluation.

Steps

  1. Register a team account on the vendor's developer portal. Use a corporate email domain to make later upgrades to a formal trial easier.
  2. Enter the Sandbox / Playground and run one end-to-end call using the official example first.
  3. Record the rate limits (requests per minute, daily cap, concurrency) and design your evaluation plan around them.
  4. If the evaluation passes, use sandbox usage records as evidence of "real usage" to apply for formal trial credits.

Conditions and Limits

  • Sandbox credits are usually not for production and may change or be discontinued at any time.
  • Some sandboxes prohibit uploading real business data; use anonymized or synthetic data only.
  • Sandbox accounts may not be linked to formal accounts, so usage history may not transfer.

Choosing Among the Three

  • Already have a cloud account and want to move fast: start with a marketplace trial subscription.
  • Have a clear business scenario and want guidance: start with an SI partner POC.
  • Just want a technical evaluation without alerting procurement: start with a public sandbox.

These routes stack. Use a sandbox for technical validation, a marketplace subscription for small-scale load testing, and a partner POC to produce a report you can take into internal planning.

Notes

  • Confirm data processing and compliance terms on every route, especially where personal data is involved.
  • Set reminders before trial expiry to avoid unexpected auto-billing.
  • Do not repeatedly re-register the same entity to farm credits; most platforms deduplicate entities.
  • The more specific your stated validation goal, the faster approvals tend to go.

When This Applies

  • Product or engineering teams of roughly 5–50 people that need to complete technical selection before a formal purchase.
  • Companies that already have a cloud account but no direct commercial relationship with the model vendor.
  • Teams that need a reportable POC conclusion rather than long-term free credits.
