Limited-time windows are not the same as a free tier: they have a hard start and end, and once they close, they are gone. So the play is not "try things slowly" but "camp early, execute on the day, and mop up afterwards." Here is how to break down three windows.

Three shapes of a window

  1. Pre-heat (1–3 weeks before): vendors open waitlists, teaser pages, and newsletter signups. What you earn here is *eligibility*, not credits — join the early-access list, subscribe to the newsletter, follow the official Discord/X. Many launch perks go only to waitlist members.
  2. Drop / launch (1–7 days): the actual credit-granting window. Common forms: sign-up bonus, first top-up match, limited-time discount codes, free API credit packs, model trial periods.
  3. Encore (1–4 weeks after): Cyber Monday after Black Friday, the back-to-work season after Lunar New Year, GA promos after a launch. Credits are often *easier* to grab here because traffic drops and review loosens.

Steps

Step 1: Build a window calendar

Put all three kinds of dates in one calendar (Google Calendar or Notion both work):

  • Fixed holidays: Black Friday usually lands on the fourth Friday of November, with Cyber Monday right after; Lunar New Year floats each year (2026 falls in mid-February — check the actual lunar calendar); back-to-school in August–September.
  • Event-driven: most cloud and model vendors run launch promos around their annual events (DevDays, cloud summits). Mark those dates in advance.
  • Subscription feeds: subscribe to target platforms' blogs, changelogs, and mailing lists, and funnel them via RSS or mail rules.

Step 2: In pre-heat, do only three things

  • Join the waitlist. Launch perks are frequently waitlist-only and free to join.
  • Complete identity verification and bind a payment method (bind, do not top up). Many promos require "new user + card on file."
  • Finish email verification and any business verification ahead of time so you do not get stuck in review on drop day.

Step 3: On drop day, claim official first, aggregators second

  • Priority 1: first-party channels. Model vendors' own API consoles and cloud vendors' promo pages. These credits are usually the most stable and least restricted.
  • Priority 2: aggregators / gateways. They often run top-up rebates or sign-up credits around holidays, but watch expiry and rate limits.
  • Priority 3: co-branded hardware and tooling campaigns. GPU vendors, IDEs, and notebook platforms frequently issue co-branded credits around these dates.

Do not register on every platform the same day — many promos require "new user" status, and once you register you lose eligibility. Read the terms before you click register.

Step 4: Use the encore window to sweep

  • Check your spam folder: promo codes and credit top-up notices are often misfiled.
  • Watch official status / changelog pages: GA launches and rate-limit changes often come with bonus credits.
  • Log credits you claimed but have not used, so they do not silently expire.

Caveats

  • Credits usually expire: commonly 30–90 days, and sometimes counted from *activation*, not from claim.
  • New-user only: most launch perks apply only to accounts that have never registered before. Existing accounts generally cannot get them.
  • Do not invent numbers: the exact amounts change every year. Always defer to the official page. This article deliberately uses "about / typically" phrasing.
  • Beware phishing: only claim credits on official domains, and never enter an API key into a third-party short link.
  • Regional limits: some promos are restricted to specific countries/regions. Confirm the terms before registering.

Who this is for

  • Solo developers: limited budget, using holiday windows to stock up several months of API credits at once.
  • Small teams: running a PoC before procurement, validating model quality with promo credits.
  • Content/automation projects: getting early-access credits for new models to run comparison tests.

A reusable window checklist

| Window | Pre-heat | Drop | Encore |

| --- | --- | --- | --- |

| Black Friday | Join waitlist, bind card | Claim official sign-up/top-up credits | Cyber Monday sweep |

| Lunar New Year | Follow official accounts/Discord | Claim holiday packs and code drops | Back-to-work top-ups |

| Launch week | Subscribe to changelog, join waitlist | Claim trial credits, early access | GA promo re-claim |

Fill this table in with concrete platform names and dates and you have your annual token calendar.
