Why Chase "Limited-Time" Instead of "Permanent Free Tier"

Permanent free tiers usually refresh monthly and come with rate limits — good as a baseline. Limited-time trial credits, holiday coupons and launch perks share a different profile: often larger, hard-expiring, and easy to overlook. In 2026 these cluster into three lanes — cloud flash trials / new-user credits, model-vendor holiday discount codes and redemption vouchers, and launch-day credits for new models or new regions.

This article only covers how to actually turn those countdown-bound resources into AI tokens.

Steps

Step 1: Build an expiry table for every credit

Open the Billing / Credits page in your cloud console and log four columns: amount, issue date, expiry date, and eligible spend scope.

Key point: most cloud trial credits only cover specific services, typically exclude third-party model marketplace markups, and may not cover serverless inference. So check whether it can offset the endpoint you plan to call before spinning up anything for it.

Step 2: Align the credit with an eligible inference endpoint

Three reliable alignments:

  1. First-party model endpoints: trial credits usually prioritize the cloud's own model APIs (e.g. each cloud's in-house LLM inference service). This is the cleanest credit-to-token path.
  2. Serverless inference for open models: some platforms let trial credits offset token-billed managed inference, but usually require a paid account first.
  3. Self-hosted GPU instances: credits pay for the machine, you run open models yourself. Token cost = electricity + time. Most durable, highest setup cost.

Step 3: Stacking order for holiday coupons and discount codes

Two common coupon types around holiday windows (year-end, Lunar New Year, mid-year sales): new-customer discount codes and top-up rebate vouchers. Order matters:

  • Activate the discount code first (usually a first-order / first-top-up percentage off), then use the rebate voucher (credit returned proportional to top-up).
  • They are often mutually exclusive: many platforms allow only one promo per account per cycle.
  • Redemption vouchers typically carry an independent expiry, often shorter than trial credits — burn them first.

Step 4: Catch the launch window

When a new model or region ships, typical launch moves are: time-boxed free usage quota, launch discount, or waitlist credits for early applicants.

  • Watch the vendor's Release Notes / Changelog, not just the marketing homepage.
  • Launch free quota is usually counted separately per model and does not stack with credits you already hold.
  • If there's an application form, submit early: credits are often released in batches, first-come-first-served.

Step 5: Script the credit into tokens before it expires

For credits nearing expiry, write a minimal burn script:

```bash
# Pseudocode: burn in ascending expiry order
# 1. List all credits, sort by expire_at
# 2. For the most urgent one, call an endpoint it can offset
# 3. Persist results to avoid double-burning
```

Rule of thumb: burn the soonest-expiring first, the permanent free tier last. Permanent tiers refresh; limited-time credits do not.

Caveats

  • Don't bind a card and forget to cancel: most limited-time trials require a payment method and auto-convert to pay-as-you-go. Set a calendar reminder 3 days before expiry.
  • Credit is not the same as usable tokens: credit is money, tokens are consumption. Between them sit two gates — the endpoint's per-token price and whether it's in the eligible scope.
  • Repeated sign-ups with the same identity/business entity usually trip risk controls. Don't farm new-customer coupons by opening duplicate accounts.
  • Holiday coupon terms often state "cannot be combined with other offers." Read the fine print before stacking.
  • This article promises no specific credit amounts: amounts differ by account, region and timing. Always trust what the console actually shows.

When This Applies

  • You hold an expiring cloud trial credit and want it to become callable model quota.
  • You plan to top up during a holiday sale and want to lower per-token cost with a discount code + rebate voucher.
  • You're tracking a new model launch and want the early free-usage window.
  • You're an indie dev or small team without sales contacts, applying self-serve.

Checklist (run before every claim)

  1. What is this credit's expiry date?
  2. Can it offset the endpoint I want to call?
  3. Did I miss any voucher that expires sooner?
  4. Is a card already bound? Should I cancel before expiry?
  5. Did I mix up the burn order between permanent free tier and limited-time credit?
